Black Reconstruction on YouTube, Episode 2

Still experimenting with how I plan to post about this series, so I'll try this out for this post.

@thereadinseries posted chapters 3 & 4 of Black Reconstruction by W. E. B. Du Bois on YouTube being read by @thereal_shafiq , @michaelmichaeltheartist , and @marquisevilson respectively. Chapter 3 dealt with the Planter oligarchy as it looked before the Civil War, while chapter 4 dealt with the American Civil War itself as it relates to Reconstruction since much of the foundations of Reconstruction were created during the war. What I liked about chapter 4 is how Du Bois really demonstrates that black people—even as they were enslaved—had to make their moves pragmatically. Because of the initial Northern policy of not ending slavery, black workers had to wait and persist until a small Northern faction (which Du Bois calls Abolition-Democracy) was able to lobby the United States towards emancipation and the use and arming of black workers against the Confederates. A very good read here. #bookstagram #book #blackreconstruction #webdubois #thereadinseries #shafiqhicks #michaelmcelroy #marquisevilson #blackwriters #blackhistory #americancivilwar #reconstruction #history #americanhistory #diverseclassics #classicliterature #nonfiction #bookcollection #blackmenread #bibliophile #wellreadblackguy
